Like most other health care modalities, massage therapy is most beneficial if it is used to prevent injury. There are too many people out there that wait until an injury happens before they will seek out any type of treatment. The most common problems I see in my line of work is pain in the neck and shoulders due to poor posture while sitting at a desk, tendonitis in the wrists, and low back and sciatic pain. All of these issues can be avoided if regular massage was being performed. Injuries are most common in muscles that don’t get regular exercise, which is why pain while sitting at a desk for 8 to 10 hours a day is so common.
As the months turn cooler and the leaves fall from the trees, few of us think twice about pulling out the rake and cleaning up the lawn. Truth is, too many injuries happen at this time of year due to poor posture while raking or even from the lack of warming up before hand. Raking is just like any other exercise, and proper precautions should be taken. In my line of work I have seen so many come in for a massage because of back and neck pain which has occurred during raking the lawn or shoveling snow. There are a few things that can help prevent injury while working outside this season. Many of us go out several times
Another form of massage therapy is sports massage, but don’t let the name fool you. Sports massage is usually indicated when there has been an injury to the body acquired during sports activity, but can apply to any activity that causes repetitive strain on the body. The most common injuries are strains and sprains, tendonitis, and inflammation. There are different stages to all injuries ranging between acute and chronic, and both have different effects on the body, and different methods of treatment. The first stage of injury is called acute. This happens when the injury is new and usually will cause pain, inflammation, and decreased movement in the injured area. Massage therapy treatment in this first stage is generally a lot lighter due to the signs and
Reflexology is a treatment that uses pressure points on the bottom of the feet to assist in healing specific areas of the body. There are over 7000 nerves in the bottom of the feet and each one is connected to an organ, endocrine or a body part. By stimulating these specific points, it encourages that corresponding area to heal and work as it normally would. Each foot represents one half of the body, the organs that are found in the right half of the body such as the liver and gallbladder are treated on the right foot, the pancreas, stomach, spleen and heart are treated on the left. It is because if this, reflexology is considered a method of alternative

Hot Stone Massage Therapy once thought of as a spa treatment is becoming more and more popular in a clinical, therapeutic settings. The basics of the treatment remain the same. Lava stones are heated to a comfortable temperature and used throughout the massage to provide heat and relaxation to further losen up tight muscles. The difference I find, lies in the techniques used. In most spa treatments I have experienced, the stones are placed on the body to heat up specific areas and then removed when the massage begins. Very rarely have I noticed the stones being used in correlation with the massage techniques themselves. Massage Therapists are trained to use the heated stones along with massage techniques, alternating between the stone and their hands. Using the
Most people when asked have no idea what their benefits consist of and yet they are paying into it from month to month. I encourage all of you to have a good look at what you are entitled to. Most plans cover Massage Therapy and Acupuncture, and some even cover other modalities such as Physiotherapy. The best way to keep yourself healthy is to find those treatments that work for you. Sometimes you will get the most benefit from combining treatments. I also find that it helps to spread your benefits out and make them last longer throughout the year. My personal preference is massage therapy coupled with acupuncture, but everyone is unique and most find that combination that works
